Can a full MMORPG run in a browser tab?

Short answer

Yes. Current browsers can draw a full 3D world on your own device instead of streaming video from a server. Keldurn uses this to run the classic 1.12 world in a tab: a persistent realm, real groups and the long road to level 60, with nothing to install.

Key facts

What changed for browser MMOs

Browser MMOs used to mean simple 2D games or small 3D worlds built for plugins that no longer exist. Current browsers can draw detailed 3D scenes with the graphics hardware already inside your computer or phone, so a large world no longer needs a separate program.

This is not cloud gaming. Cloud services run a game on a remote computer and send you compressed video. A browser MMORPG such as Keldurn draws every frame on your device, so what you see is the game itself rather than a video of it.

What your device needs

Use an up-to-date browser with hardware graphics acceleration switched on, and close other heavy tabs before a long session. The first visit downloads and prepares the game data, which takes a while on a slow connection; after that the browser keeps it and later sessions start much faster.

Phones and tablets work too, with a touch layout. If you are unsure about a device, run the browser check in the Keldurn guides before you create a character.

What makes it an MMORPG rather than a browser game

Scale and persistence. Keldurn is one realm where everybody plays together: quests that need a group, five-player dungeons, forty-player raids, battlegrounds and an economy driven by players. Characters stay on the realm, and players in a browser tab share it with players on the Windows client.

  • Classic 1.12 content with x1 rates and a level cap of 60.
  • One PvP realm for every device.
  • Free to play, with an optional shop that never sells power.

Questions players ask

Does a browser MMORPG need a powerful computer?

It needs a reasonably recent device with graphics acceleration enabled in the browser. Closing other heavy tabs helps more than most settings.

Can I switch to a downloaded client later?

Yes. The Windows client uses the same account and the same realm, so your characters come with you.

Is a browser MMORPG free?

Keldurn is: creating an account and playing are free, in the browser and on Windows.
